Hankou life captured by 1908 book | 百年前书籍记录汉口生活

Wuhan local Zeng Jianxin recently found an original edition of the book "The Sons of Han: Stories of Chinese Life and Mission Work" published in 1908. The book contains 74 photos that can serve as useful materials for research into the Wuhan society of 110 years ago.

武汉人曾建新最近发现了一本出版于1908年的原版书籍《汉人:中国人的生活和我们的传教故事》。书中所附的74张照片,提供了研究110年前武汉社会的有益资料。

The author of the book is Bernard Upward, a British missionary who worked in China early in the last century. The book describes the characteristics, habits, cultural conventions, and daily life of people who lived in Hankou around the turn of the 20th century, with a focus on the lives of women and children.

书籍作者余恩思是一名上世纪初在中国工作的英国传教士。该书描述了20世纪之交汉口人的性格习惯、文化风俗、日常生活,特别是儿童和女子的状况。

The book introduces the occasions when new items first emerged. One picture shows a pole vault competition on a sports field at a Hankou university.

书里介绍了现代新生事物传播到汉口的情形。如一张照片反映了汉口的大学在运动场举行撑杆跳高比赛。
